Book Review: One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

When Simon does not make it out of detention alive one school afternoon, everyone is asking themselves who could be responsible for such a thing?! All fingers point to the last 6 people that saw him alive that afternoon: a teacher and 5 students but who could be responsible for such an evil plan towards a student?

This book is Pretty Little Liars meets Gossip Girl meets twisted and dark Breakfast Club and I loved it from beginning to end. I devoured the book in just 2 short days (max 3 hours total of reading), Mc Manus is a genius and I loved how she build to stores in such a quick and moving read.

Despite its catty gossip and teenage angsty personality , this book does cover tough social issues that many people face throughout their life such as: sexual orientation, bullying, suicide , body image issues, sex , and depression. This book also touches on topics that many teens deal with in High School such as pressure to have good grades and going to a Ivy League school. There are toxic family dynamics. This novel just has so many underlying topics within its “murder mystery” genre.

I found myself thinking so many different alternatives to who could be responsible for the death of Simon. I’m not going to lie and I was completely shocked because it was not what I was expecting at all. I had zero trust in almost every character that was in detention that day.

I can’t wait to try the second part of the novel “One of Us is Next?”

Has anyone tried it yet? What are your thoughts ? Comment down below.
