Curly hair has a mind of its own, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do certain things to maintain it and make it look its best. Below are a few of my Dos and Don’ts for working with my 3B Curls. Many of these tips could be use with any curl type because one thing all curl types have in common is that they need a lot of tender, love, and care.

  1. Deep Condition at least once a week.
  2. Apply hair masks at least twice a month.
  3. Stay away from heat as much as possible.
  4. Stay away from silicone, sulfates, and parabens
  5. Try more co-washing.
  6. Minimize how much shampoo you use.
  7. Educate yourself on the proper hair products you should use on your hair.
  8. Add avocado, lots of water, and eggs to your diet.
  9. Hair vitamins!
  10. Scalp massages.
  11. Always leave a leave in conditioner as a base for your style whether you are going to leave it curly or not. Curly hair needs a lot of hydration.
  12. Stay away from smoking.
  13. Don’t touch your hair too much.
  14. Use a brush that is curly hair friendly like a Denman Brush or Tangle Teezer Brush.
  15. Air dry  as much as possible.
  16. When diffuser make sure you alternate between cool and hot settings.
  17. Don’t wash your hair too many times a week.
  18. If you have a water bottle to spray your hair, always put a little bit of leave in conditioner inside to add extra moisture to your hair and keep it nice and healthy.
  19. Stay away from gels that are not curly hair friendly.
  20. Don’t dye your hair too much. Try to stick to natural colors or take breaks between dyes to let your hair recuperate.
