Cat Calls or Compliments ?

As of late, the media has been shining the light on women that are cat called on a daily basis. I feel this is an issue that has been going on for so long that it is part of daily life. We live in a society where if we wear anything close to “sexy” or “sensual”, you can already assume that the moment you walk out the door you will be getting harassed by men from block to block.

It is completely bizarre that this has become the norm in society, and this is why I believe that this media attention on “cat calling” will hopefully open the eyes of the men that partake in this activity.

What men say is not always complimentary. Sometimes they day offense and sexual comments that make you cringe. It is sexual harassment, but how can it be taken as a serious act when it has all of a sudden it’s part of normality.

There has been times where I change my outfit completely because I do not want to call unwanted attention to myself; however, this should not be the case. There are just certain comments you do not want to hear. I find myself disgusted and angry when I hear certain comments. Sometimes I fire back and other times I just walk away. What can you really do when it’s one against a group of guys that just want to act cocky and confident amongst their friends.

I am not trying to say that it’s not okay to compliment a woman and tell her that she is beautiful, but when the form of the compliment escalates to the point that a woman feels disrespected that’s when things need to stop.

Hopefully with the attention cat calling is getting, more awareness will be spread throughout the world. People need to be conscious of what they do or say. The comments could be harmless, but the way they are understood by the receiver can be completely different.

At the end of the day, it is all about respect. As long as people learn to respect each other and know the boundaries that should not be crossed. There won’t be any issues. What are your thoughts ?
